E-Bike Service Policy
At Wheelie Good Bikes, we’re committed to providing expert, safe service for e-bike riders. This policy covers the systems we support, Illinois’s legal classification for e-bikes, and our battery and safety standards — please read before booking e-bike service. Supported Motor Systems
We’re trained and certified to service e-bike motor systems from:
- Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, Brose, Bafang, TQ, Fazua, Vinka, and Hyena
- Found on major brands including Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, Scott, Giant, Surly, Gazelle, Tern, Benno, Bulls, Dahon, and more
Direct-to-consumer brands we directly support: Tenways, Tern, Urban Arrow, Benno, Surly, and Kona.
For any other e-bike brand or motor system not listed above, contact us before booking. We’ll ask you to provide a list of the specific parts needed so we can confirm sourcing and lead time before you bring the bike in for service.
Devices We Do Not Service
We do not service e-scooters, moped-style e-bikes, or electric dirt bikes or motorcycles of any kind or size, regardless of motor wattage or classification. Our certification and shop insurance cover low-speed electric bicycles only.
Legal Classification & Derestriction
Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/1-140.10) defines a "low-speed electric bicycle" as a bicycle with fully operable pedals and a motor under 750 watts, falling into one of three classes:
- Class 1 — pedal-assist only, cuts off at 20 mph
- Class 2 — pedal-assist and throttle, cuts off at 20 mph
- Class 3 — pedal-assist only, cuts off at 28 mph (rider must be 16+, speedometer required)
A bike exceeding 750 watts, capable of throttle-only operation above 20 mph, or lacking fully operable pedals does not meet the legal definition of an e-bike in Illinois — it falls into a separate regulatory category ("e-moto") requiring a driver’s license, registration, and insurance to operate on public roads, and is not permitted on bike lanes or paths.
We reserve the right to decline service on any e-bike that:
- Has had a speed limiter, wattage governor, or throttle restriction removed or bypassed
- Has been modified to exceed 750 watts or 28 mph assisted speed
- No longer meets the legal definition of a Class 1, 2, or 3 low-speed electric bicycle
If we discover a derestriction or non-compliant modification during diagnosis or repair, we will inform you of the finding and may decline to proceed with further work at our discretion. This does not affect the diagnostic fee.
Battery & Safety Standards
- We do not service swollen, damaged, or overheated batteries
- We will not solder or modify batteries, motors, or controllers
- In some cases, we may require the customer to remove the battery before leaving the bike for service
- All work follows safety standards for lithium-ion storage and charging
Service Limitations
- We do not install aftermarket conversion kits or modify existing drive systems
- We only perform repairs, upgrades, or diagnostics within the scope of the manufacturer’s specifications
- Firmware updates and diagnostics are offered only on supported systems

- Fender, rack, lighting, and cargo accessory installs
- Puncture protection and tire upgrades
